As spring comes to an end on the central cost of California, it harvest time for one of the areas best known crops, strawberries! We love our strawberries, and have multiple festivals dedicated to the delicious red berry.
If you are local, then you know the best place for buying them isn’t the grocery store. Instead you head out to your favorite strawberry stand out in the fields. They are sweeter, fresher, and you can buy them in larger quantities. Not to mention the fact that they can be as large as your fist! But what do we normally do with these massive amounts of berries?
One of my go to desserts that I make for parties are chocolate covered strawberries, and already I’ve had two events this year that I have made them for. They are great since they aren’t too filling, and won’t make you feel too guilty about eating them ;). I usually drizzle mine with a colored candy coating after dipping. It’s quick and easy to do, and they look so elegant.
Another favorite is toasted pound cake with vanilla ice-cream and fresh strawberries. It’s easy enough to find loafs of poundcake at the grocery store. The trick is to pop a slice of it in the toaster, and toast until the cake is golden brown. It’s quick and easy, but friends are always surprised by how good it is.
Because fresh strawberries from the stand are usually perfectly ripe when you buy them, they also turn overripe within a few days. You can wash them, slice them, and store them in the refrigerator so they last longer. Or of you have more berries than you can eat in a few days you can wash them, slice them, and freeze them to use in smoothies.
