The holidays are always filled with excitement and cheer. There are parties, friends and family visiting, decorations, baking, and an ever-growing list of cheesy movies. There is that thrill of finding the perfect gifts for everyone on your list, and the priceless looks on their faces when they open it.
As a kid, I loved getting books for Christmas. The only thing that could possibly be better than getting a book, was getting a gift card to buy more books! I still have them all too. If I was a dragon I wouldn’t hoard gold or gems, but books (and possibly tea…).
Of all the books in my collection though, lately, I’ve been thinking of one, in particular, The Ice Dragon by George R.R. Martin. For those of you that haven’t read it, it’s about a little girl and a dragon that watches over her. What speaks to me the most in this book are Martin’s descriptions of the snowy winter landscape. It is beautiful and magical, but also harsh and lonely.
It’s a bittersweet story, and I always get a little misty-eyed when I read it. It is a children’s book, and pretty short, just over 100 pages. It also has lovely Illustrations by Yvonne Gilbert. If you haven’t read it, I sincerely recommend it. You can find it on George R.R. Martin’s webpage here: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/grrm_book/the-ice-dragon/
I hope your holidays were filled with all the love and joy of the season.
Happy New Year!!!
